My Favorite Monkey

I have a monkey. Most of you don't know that, but I do. She hides her prehensile tail in those cute little diapers, but I know it's there when I watch her climb up on the couch all by herself, then haul herself up onto the arm of the couch and crawl around on the back.

I wish I had a picture, but every time she sees the camera, she smiles at me and tumbles on to the cushions.

People say I'm a fearless mama, because I let my girl climb and gnaw on the backs of chairs (who knows where those chairs have been!) and play in the dirt. But I say, how will she know what she can do if I don't let her try. And how will she know how well she is held if I don't catch her when she falls?

Oh, I hope I can be a momma like you!

There are scary stories of my husband as a child--like climbing to the roof of a two-story house when he was 18 months. Not that I'd want my 18-month-old child taking quite that risk, but some risks, yes.

Am I that brave?

I have a sixteen month old monkey. I completely understand! She's my third, and I am only just now letting her learn how to fall without catching her. It's one of the hardest things to do as the parent of....a monkey. ;) So cute!

I'm trying to find that balance as a mama - I don't care about the dirt, but I hate not being able to catch all of his falls.

i LOVE that you do that! i do too! (let them eat dirt, i say... it's good for them!) in moderation of course. but that's what being a child is all about. your deep mama love pours through this post... xo

Healthy immunity begins with eating a little dirt, right? (That's what I tell myself!)

Love these germy, monkey babies. :)

I am always calling Grace a little monkey! One of her favorite places to climb is on the futon (and on us!)

Heather, you'll be a great mama. And I think all writers are brave (among others, of course).

Jennie - That is brave, to let her fall without trying to catch her. I'm not that far yet!

Wandering - It's hard, when you want to catch and you can't, or when you know they need to fall sometimes!

Emily - Thank you! And moderation is always a good thing. After all, a steady diet of dirt won't help anything!

Farmgirl - Monkey babies are the best . . . still making peace with the germs, though.

Sharon - yes! Mirren likes to climb us, too. What is up with that? And I want to meet your Grace someday!

you're a good momma.

i wonder who she inherited her tail from? i'm thinking the banana didn't fall too far from the tree. :)
